The city’s history also includes Byzantine, Arab, Norman, and Spanish rule, with many historical layers visible today, particularly in the Baroque architecture of the Ortigia island center, where ancient temples have been incorporated into later buildings. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site celebrated for its rich past and vibrant present.
