Catania

Catania is the second largest city of Sicily, located on the slopes of the Etna Mount. The history of Catania is really connected with the volcano; in fact, the city has been destroyed by volcanic eruptions several times over the years. After the last, occurred in 1693, Catania was rebuilt in baroque style, and lava was used as main material for the reconstruction of several building. Here lies the most noteworthy feature of this city, that with its characteristic “grey” color is unique in the world.

A visit of the city centre will lead you to discover the beautiful baroque squares and the most beautiful highlights, such as the Cathedral dedicated to S. Agata, the Bellini Theatre and the Ursino castle. When in Duomo square, you’ll bump into the symbol of the city, called “liofante” by local people: a lava elephant fountain carrying an obelisk.

Stroll along “via Etnea”, the most elegant street where you’ll run into many shops and street performers.

But, above all, you definitely cannot leave Catania before visiting its colourful, lively and smelly fish market, and being amazed by its captivating atmosphere: here you’ll have the chance an incredible selection of fresh fish and seafood.
